New Motor Vehicle Sales, Total Vehicles - Short Term

• Trend - The December 2007 estimate for new motor vehicle sales (90 579) increased 0.8% when compared with November 2007. The trend estimate has been increasing for over 15 consecutive months. When compared to December 2006, the trend estimate increased by 8.3%.
• Seasonally adjusted - The December 2007 estimate for total sales of new motor vehicles (91 384) increased by 1.1% compared with November 2007.

• Trend - All vehicle types recorded increases in trend estimates when comparing December 2007 to November 2007. Other vehicles, sports utility vehicles and passenger vehicles increased by 1.2%, 0.9% and 0.5% respectively. When compared to the same period 12 months ago, sports utility vehicles, other vehicles and passenger vehicles rose 19.9%, 17.3% and 2.1% respectively.
• Seasonally adjusted - When comparing December 2007 to November 2007, passenger vehicles and sports utility vehicles increased by 3.0% and 0.9% respectively, while other vehicles decreased by 3.9%.

• Trend - When comparing December 2007 to November 2007, all states and territories except for Western Australia showed increases in the trend estimate of total sales of new motor vehicles. The largest increase was for Queensland (2.0%). Western Australia decreased by 0.2%.
• Seasonally adjusted - When comparing December 2007 to November 2007, six states and territories showed increases in total sales. The largest increases were in Queensland and the Australian Capital Territory, both increasing 3.9%. Total sales decreased in Tasmania and South Australia by 7.6% and 2.4% respectively.
